8° (180 x 114mm.). 28 leaves. A-C8 D4. Ruled in red. 18th-century English red morocco gilt bound for RICHARD RAWLINSON, panelled covers with his scallop shell (at corners of inner border) and crest (centrally placed) (both Davenport p.323), spine gilt in six compartments, lettered in one the others with overall tooling, g.e. (extremities very slightly rubbed). Provenance: Dr. Richard Rawlinson (1690-1755, bibliophile. Binding and characteristic 'C.& P.' manuscript note); Robert Shafto of Benwell, Northumberland (armorial bookplate); William Adair (armorial bookplate).
The contents are padded out to a normal 8° thickness with approximately 150 leaves of blank paper. The majority of Rawlinson's books and manuscripts were bequeathed to Oxford and are now in the Bodleian, the remainder were sold by Samuel Baker at two sales in 1756 and 1757. His heart was left to St.John's and was kept in a marble urn in the chapel.
