Lot Essay

Private James Melanphy joined the 13th Light Dragoons, Dublin, 14 July 1846, aged 20 years; he served in the Crimea and is shown on the master (pay) rolls as being present on full pay throughout the whole of the campaign; his name is shown in the l877 list of members of the Balaklava Commemoration Society, but does not appear in the revised list of 1879 (see History of the 13th Hussars for photograph of recipient); his name is spelt variously as Malanfy, Malanphy, Melanphy and Melanfy, but in all cases his regimental number is shown correctly as 1276, and for the period July 1856 - September 1866 he is shown as Melanphy which would have therefore been the spelling given to the Royal Mint for the naming of his medal; Private Melanphy was discharged in 1874 after having served for 27½ years
