INDENTThe Grand Priory in the British Realm reports:
"The Life Saving Medal .... was awarded to Havildar Nar Sing Gurung for heroism displayed during the Dharmsala earthquake which occurred on 14th April 1905. It was one of twenty-two medals awarded to Officers, NCOs and men of the Gurkha Rifles in connection with their heroism during the earthquake."
"In front of the president of the Officers' Mess stood a silver statuette of a Gurkha - Naik Chandsing Thapa, of ours. It was in l905 that he was a Naik and in that same year ... the lst Gurkhas had given us this statuette of him. An earthquake had destroyed their home station of Dharmsala, and a party of ours, Chandsing among them, went to the rescue. Dharmsala is 35 miles from Bakloh by precipitous mountain paths. Every man of our rescue party had been given a pick and shovel or crowbar, and told to find his own way to Dharmsala as fast as he could.
