Lot Essay

INDENTSenior Reserve Attendent W. Laycock one of the original members of the R.N.A.S.B.R. volunteered for service at the outbreak of war and with other members of the 'Colne Contingent' of ambulance men arrived at Dunkirk 1 October 1914, arriving at Vieux Dieu near Antwerp on the 4th. On duty the following day and under continuous heavy shellfire they brought in wounded from the trenches, tending them in makeshift hospitals and dressing stations. The unit served in and around Antwerp before the city fell to the advancing Germans when they took part in the general retreat, eventually arriving at Ostend before embarking for England (an interesting account of the Colne Ambulance men accompanies the group)
