INDENT Captain Eric Scott Aplin, was gazetted Second Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment, 8 August 1914; Lieutenant January 1915, took part in the Battle of Loos (wounded), and the Battle of the Somme 1916; Captain Aplin was mortally wounded on the Eastern slope of Passchendaele Ridge 10 March 1918 while leading an offensive patrol, and died the next day
Lieutenant Elphinstone D'Oyley Aplin, born Upnor Castle near Rochester, 1892, entered the Gloucestershire Regiment February 1913 and was promoted Lieutenant October 1914; severely wounded in action near Ypres, 9 May 1915 when '...his platoon was cut off ... Lieutenant Aplin though seriously wounded succeeded in getting back with three men.' (Regimental History refers.) Lieutenant Aplin died 13 May 1915 at No. 3 Casualty Clearing Station and is buried in the Bailleul Cemetery
The two brothers were sons of Colonel Hugh Morgan Aplin of the Royal Naval Ordnance Department, and grandsons of Admiral E.D'O.A. Aplin
