Lot Essay

Such idiosyncractic trompe l'oeil marquetry, in imitation of lacquer paintings of Chinese objects and flower-vases, is associated with the specialist 18th century marqueteur Charles Topino. The same patterns appear on two related tables illustrated in C. Payne, 19th Century European Furniture, Woodbridge, 1985, p. 124.

A bonheur du jour with related marquetry is illustrated in Andre Boutemy, Meubles Français Anonymes du XVIIIe Siecle, Bruxelles, 1973, p. 22.
