A PAIR OF GEORGE III MAHOGANY DINING-CHAIRS after a design by Thomas Chippendale, each with waved toprail carved with acanthus and centred by an acanthus-spray, above a gothick interlaced-scroll vase-shaped splat, the stiles carved with rockwork, the serpentine seats covered in distressed ivory floral silk damask, on chamfered panelled square legs headed by pierced angle brackets, filled with blind gothic tracery and joined by plain H-shaped stretchers, one splat replaced, the angle-brackets mostly replaced and detached, one back seat-rail with additional support (2)

Lot Essay

These 'gothic' parlour chairs with ribbon-fret splats and legs and serpentine acanthus-wrapped crests relate to patterns published in Robert Manwaring, The Cabinet and Chair-maker's Real Friend and Companion, 1765. A closely related splat appeared on a set of ten chairs sold anonymously in these Rooms, 18 March 1937, lot 25
