Lot Essay

The sitter is presumably John Crewe of Crewe Hall, the eldest son of John Offley of Madeley Manor, Staffordshire, and Anne Crewe of Crewe Hall, heiress of John Crewe, the last male of the line. The sitter changed his name by deedpoll in 1708 to Crewe, upon inheriting his mother's estate
