Lot Essay

'Daniel', foaled 1762, by 'Young Cade' out of an unrecorded mare by 'Crab', was bred by Mr. Bland and originally named 'Hemp'. Over the period 1766 to 1772 'Hemp' had twenty wins. In 1770 'Hemp' was the property of Mr. Quick, and by 1771 was the property of Mr. Bishop who renamed the horse 'Daniel'. The racing colours of Messrs. Bland, Quick and Bishop are not known but it is probable that the initial B on the rug refers to Mr. Bishop the final owner.
