Lot Essay

Probably views in South West India below Bombay. The artist served in the Madras army of the East India Company and seems to have travelled extensively within India. He presented the Company with ten oils in 1773, now in the India Office Library, and a further seventy six were offered to them in 1790. Some of these latter were acquired by Richard Chase, later Mayor of Madras, on the artist's death in 1794.
An oil by Ward of the Fort at Thana, north of Bombay, is in the Victoria Memoria, Calcutta
