Lot Essay

Charpentier's technical innovations served as an important foundation for the invention and development of the aquatint process by Saint-Non and Delafosse in 1765, which allowed for larger editions than those enjoyed by Charpentier's prints, which remain scarce since only a very limited number of impressions could be pulled from his delicately worked plates.
