Lot Essay

Le Sidaner's perfectionist approach and attention to detail caused him to return to this painting after Georges Petit had acquired it in 1926. Dissatisfied with a number of compositional elements, Le Sidaner painted out a long shadow that stretched from the base of the climbing rose in the centre of the picture to the right hand side, thus avoiding any visual obstacle as the eye looks toward the illuminated window at the end of the courtyard on the far right. The photograph reproduced in the catalogue raisonné was taken in 1926 by Georges Petit before these changes had been made.
