Lot Essay

The model for this painting is probably Lucie Hessel. Vuillard first met her through Félix Vallotton in Lausanne and the two quickly established a close relationship which led Vuillard to paint several portraits of her over many years.

To be included in the forthcoming Edouard Vuillard catalogue raisonné being prepared by Antoine Salomon and Annette Leduc Beaulieu from the records and under the responsibility of Antoine Salomon.
