Specimen 4d. proof pair in black with large "P", small "1901" and clichés 2½mm. apart, on soft wove paper with wide sheet margins at top and at foot, the right stamp initialled at foot, marked on reverse "These stamps were taken at the capture of Petersburg by Plumers column in April 1901. The signature is that of the Landrost J. Smit. C.H. Ord, Lt 3rd Aust. Bush"; some creasing though a very scarce and unusual pair. Also a letter from E.B. Evans regarding this item. Ex Lagerloef. Photo
