Lot Essay

The present drawing is similar in size, medium and subject matter to an album of drawings in the collection of Lord Bruce which was sold at Christie's London, 27 April 1965, lots 58-64. However, it has not been possible conclusively to link the drawing to one of these lots.
The drawings, possibly including the present lot, have been identified as the original work for Sandby's series entitled London Cries, done from ye Life. Although only twelve of the drawings were engraved, it is clear from Lord Bruce's album and the 77 copies after Sandby in the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, that a larger publication was projected.
