Lot Essay

Knaresborough Castle, Yorkshire, was built by Serlo de Burgh shortly after the Norman Conquest. It remained well defended until the Civil War, when it fell to Lilburne, the Parliamentary General. The ancient ruins of the Castle stand on a steep bank high above the city and overlook the River Nid, which almost encompasses the town.
