Lot Essay

In 1812 Gillows of Lancaster supplied eight mahogany trunk-stands, closely related to the present lot, to Wilbraham Egerton (d.1856) for Tatton Park, Cheshire. They cost £1 16s. 0d. each. One of them is illustrated in N. Goodison and J. Hardy, 'Gillows at Tatton Park', Furniture History, 1970, pl. 14a.
A pair of similar mahogany trunk-stands, in the manner of Gillows, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 26 September 1996, lot 39.
