A GEORGE II WALNUT OPEN ARMCHAIR
Covered overall in associated gros and petit point needlework, the waved, shaped rectangular back emblematic of Autumn, with Bacchantic figures harvesting grapes, within a foliate C-scroll frame with yellow ground centred to the top by an espagnolette mask, the acanthus-wrapped channelled scrolled arms with rosette and patera terminals, the seat with a still-life of carnations and peonies within a further foliate C-scroll border on a yellow ground, on acanthus and C-scroll carved cabriole legs trailed with a bell-husk, on acanthus- carved pad feet with inset castors, restorations, with four later blocks, each seat-rail stamped '16', three feet with repaired breaks

Lot Essay

A related mahogany chair with scrolled acanthus feet, was illustrated by Hotspur in the Exhibition Catalogue for the 1951 Antique Dealers' Fair and Exhibition.
