Lot Essay
The mirror is conceived in the George II Roman manner and, with its flowered 'tabernacle' frame surmounted by flowered pediment and accompanied by a Vestal mask and Venus-shell badge, it relates to mirror patterns published in William Jones's, The Gentleman or Builder's Companion, 1739 (pls. 41-6).
A related mirror, one of a pair, was illustrated by M. Harris and Sons in The Connoisseur, July, 1972 and another related pair was sold by the Westmoreland Museum of Art, Sotheby's New York, 8 December 1989, lot 363.
