A GEORGE I BURR-WALNUT KNEEHOLE-DESK
Feather-banded overall, the hinged rounded rectangular banded and quarter-veneered top enclosing a later-fitted walnut interior with numerous compartments and secret compartments above a simulated long drawer and a central short drawer, above the kneehole with a door in the recess, flanked at either side by three drawers,on bracket feet and metal caps, restorations to the feet

Lot Essay

A kneehole-desk of this unusual form is illustrated in R.W.Symonds, 'Craft of the Cabinet-Maker illustrated by examples in the collection of Mr. Frederick Poke', Apollo, January 1940, p.203, no. IV.
A walnut kneehole dressing-table with a similar hinged top enclosing a fitted interior, and once in the collection of the poet, Lord Byron (d. 1824) was sold by members of the Blackwell family, from the collection of the late Geoffrey Blackwell, in these Rooms, 9 July 1992, lot 146.
