Lot Essay

The physical types in drawings by Lodovico such as The Madonna and Saints adoring the Infant Christ and The Madonna and Child adored by Saints of circa 1605, formerly in the Ellesmere Collection sold at Sotheby's, 11 July 1972, lots 13-14, both illustrated, recall the present study. An attribution to Lorenzo Garbieri (1580-1654) has been suggested on the basis of comparison with his pictures, few drawings are known, and if this is by him it must be an early drawing, when he was studying at the Carracci Academy
