A preparatory study with minor differences for Canuti's altarpiece in Santa Cristina, Bologna, S. Stagni, Domenico Maria Canuti, Rimini, 1988, no.42, pl. XXXIX. The picture was painted for a nun of the Vizzani family, probably in the early 1680s after the completion of Canuti's frescoes in the Library of San Michele in Bosco. In Felsina Pittrice (1686 ed.,p.267) Malvasia referred to the picture as 'la spiritosamente istoriata S. Cristina, afferrata per gli capegli dal Padre, con terrore e Pietà degli astanti é del ferace Canuti'
