Lot Essay

The pack depicted appears to have been a private one and was probably the origin of the Tidworth Hounds.

An interesting feature to note in this important and ambitious picture is the presence of extensive pentimenti showing how the artist developed and improved the composition as he worked. A version of this picture was sold in these Rooms, 24 June 1977, lot 47 (£17,000).
