The Louis XV serpentined frame relates to a chair pattern published by Thomas Malton in his Compleat Treatise on Perspective, 1775, pl. XXXIII, fig. 131, while the multi-pilaster back was first engraved by A. Hepplewhite & Co. in thei Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 2nd edn., 1789. This unusual form fuses the George III 'rout' chair frame with that of a Windso chair.
