Lot Essay

In view of its unusual form and decoration, it would seem that this chiffonier, with its mirror-backed display-shelf, was constructed to display the intricate pen-work patterns. In the early 19th century, patterms fpr such work in the 'antique' manner, appropriate as a 'Ladies Amusement' and entitles 'Ornaments for Painting on Wood and Fancy Work' featured in Rudolph Ackermann, Repository of Arts, Literature, Fashions, 1809-28
