Lot Essay
The bookcase's style reflects the fusion of the classical and gothic styles in the first decade of the 19th Century. While the glazing bars' gothic arcading derives from patterns illustrated by Thomas Sheraton, Cabinet-Makers and Upholsterers Drawing Book, 1803, pl. 18, their medallioned bands, in the 'antique' manner, are inspired by Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807. The cornice combines Hope's Etruscan-ebony inlay and palmette-enrichments with the type of crenellated and quatrefoil-enriched tablets found in George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture, 1808, pl. 18
