Decorated with Chokaro Sennin in takabori and gold zogan, with a wood box; and the shakudo nanako base metal decorated with three quail and autumn grasses in takabori and iroe, signed Koju (Mitsutoshi) and kao, late Edo period (19th century), with a wood box (2)

Lot Essay

Goto Mitsutaka (Shujo) was an artist of the Saburoemon line founded by Kyujo Kojo. He was the son of Unjo and became the second master. His most accomplished student was Yamazaki Ichiga who later studied with Goto Ichijo.

There exists a kozuka depicting Noh masks and musical instruments with an excellent example of an attributed signature "Jujo saku Goto Mitsutaka". There are several known examples of his work usually executed in typical Goto iebori style.
