An inscription on the reverse of the drawing reads "Portrait of King Charles First as he sat on his trial in Westminster Hall January 23 1648 a drawing with the Pen by J. Faber"

This work is described in the Wellesley sale catalogue "This splendid plumbago is surely Faber's masterpiece".
