A Lady, three-quarter length, standing with her hand on a pillar, an urn to right (minor damages)

on card, pencil heightened with body colour, framed
rectangular, 5 1/2in. 9150mm.) high

Lot Essay

This drawing is typical of Cosway's late, highly mannerist stained or tinged portrait drawings. These are mainly drawn in graphite but have watercolour for the face. It can be compared to the bust length drawing of "A Lady revealed by Cupid or an Angel" in the Huntington Library, San Marino and the three-quarter length portrait drawing of "Madame Recamier" which was engraved by A. Caron in 1802.

We are grateful to Stephen Lloyd for his help in this catalogue entry.
