Lot Essay

This miniature was painted on Millington's return to Ireland in 1822 when the 42nd Foot (The Black Watch) was on service in Ireland (1821-1822).

The sitter wears the uniform of a Field Officer and the medal for Waterloo. On the strength of this, Colonel Walton of the Army Museums Ogilby Trust has suggested that the sitter could be either of the following: Archibald Menzies, Mungo Macpherson or James Kerr Ross
