Prince Paul Troubetzkoy (1866-1938) is celebrated for his elegant and orginal portraits. A cosmopolitan artist, of renown both socially and artistically, politicians, artists and members of fashionable society were eager to pose for him. The present figure represents Miss Ada Nathan Berra, but is often known under the title of The Amazone. Troubetzkoy originally modelled the group in the 1890s, and it stands as one of his earliest equestrian portraits. Towards the end of his life, he returned to his popular models and cast them again in bronze, hence this casting dates from the 1930s in Italy. It reveals his mastery in capturing his sitter in a naturalistic pose on her lively mare 'Cinderella', while simultaneously imbuing the whole with an 'impressionistic' modelling and grace.
