This form of commode, with its mirror-backed corner shelves, designed in the Louis XVI 'antique' style of the 1780s, was popularised by the celebrated pair supplied for Marie-Antoinette's salon at the Château de Compiègne (see P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIII Siècle, Paris, 1989, P. 58)
