Discussing St. Malo, a favourite subject between the wars, the artist comments 'A grand old town which to very many English was merely a landing-place after a foul crossing from Southampton, or else just a place to hang about in until the boat left at night. It never looked its best on one's arrival, somehow, and most people pressed onto much less interesting spots. It has proved a mine of subjects for me'
