Discussing a watercolour from 1943, 'Pauline's Grotto', the artist recalled 'the chance discovery of a beautiful two-hundred-year-old grotto at Pains Hills, only twenty miles from London, made me grotto-minded for a time. I painted it within and without and then enjoyed myself inventing pictorial grottoes of my own'
