A previous owner of this painting, Mrs Charles Stewart Carstairs, was the second wife of the Chairman of the Board of M. Knoedler, Inc. of New York, Paris and London. The couple maintained residences in both London and Philadelphia. They are depicted in another work by Lavery, 'The Veranda'
