Lot Essay

The Model 1883 Gatling gun had the advantage of an extreme range of elevation adjustment but the disadvantage of requiring something more than the normal gravity-fed cartridge loading system. James Accles designed a mechanical drum feed as a solution to the problem, his system providing for both top and side magazine mounts; this magazine would appear to be fitted for a side mount. The Accles Positive feed was not a military success, being susceptible to jamming and it was quickly superseded by the 'more positive' Bruce feed
