Honble. Charles Townshend of Honingham in Norfolk/Aged one year and Half/Bean a favourite Dog/Painted by Mr. Gardener/March 1780'; pastel, oval, in an English 18th Century carved and gilded frame

Lot Essay

Charles Cornwallis (1774-1823) Viscount Brome, later 3rd Earl Cornwallis, Master of the King's Hounds, married in 1797, Lady Louisa daughter of the 4th Duke of Gordon. His children were: Jane (1798-1856), Jemima (1803-1856), Mary (1804-1872) and Louisa and Elizabeth both died unmarried.

Mary Cornwallis, born 1769, sister of 3rd Earl Cornwallis eloped with Mark Singleton (1762-1840) a Barrister, M.P. for Eye, son of Sydenham Singleton of Dublin. They married firstly in November 1785, and secondly with her Father's permission on 9th Jan 1786.

Caroline Townshend (1778-1866) was the daughter of Charles Townshend and Annabella Powlett Smith. She died unmarried at Chiselhurst Common, Kent
