Lot Essay
Designed in the early 19th Century 'antique' manner, its Greek klismos frame with reed-enriched legs and voluted arm-rests on pilaster supports, derive from an 'Apollo' pattern chair with caned lyre-back engraved in 1807 for Thomas Sheraton's, The Cabinet-Maker, Upholsterer and General Artist's Encyclopedia. The latter, like this chair's Aurora band of stars, inlaid in 'Etruscan' ebony on its tablet crest-rail, was inspired by the French Grecian furnishings in the Duchess Street mansion/museum of the connoisseur Thomas Hope (d.1831). The furnishings of Duchess Street were engraved in Hope's, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807.
