Lot Essay

The festive bacchic lion mask, emerging from roman foliage, in the antique or arabesque manner, features in French ornamental engravings of the 17th Century. A related mask appears on a sideboard-table designed by the architect William Kent for Houghton Hall, Norfolk, and is illustrated in Thomas Vardy's, Designs of Mr Inigo Jones and Mr Kent, 1744, pl.41.
