Lot Essay

Henry Courthope Campion (1734-1811) was the eldest surviving son of William Campion of Danny and Elizabeth Partheriche (see previous lot). He matriculated at Oxford in 1751 and took an active rôle in managing the family's estates in Sussex and Kent, which he inherited in 1778. He married Henrietta (1737-1771), daughter of Sir John Heathcote, Bt., of Normanton (1689-1759) Director of the East India Company and the Bank of England, by whom he had two children, William Campion (1774-1855) of Danny and Combwell, and Bridget (1769-1797). Henry Courthope Campion was involved with the Offley family in the Port business and there are numerous references to him, his family and his often turbulent business dealings in the diaries of Joseph Farington (see ed. K. Garlick and A. Macintyre, The Diary of Joseph Farington, 1978 ff, New Haven and London, I-VI)
