Lot Essay

Comparable with studies of The Death of the Virgin and Christ in Glory adored by the Madonna and Saints in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the British Museum respectively, C. Bambach Cappel, The Uffizi's Sixteenth-Century Drawings in Detroit and some Tuscan Drawings in Philadelphia, Master Drawings, XXVIII, 1990, figs. 11-12. The composition of the present study would appear to have been inspired by Santi di Tito's celebrated altarpiece in Santa Croce of circa 1572-3, preparatory drawings for which are in the Uffizi, S. Lecchini Giovannoni and M. Collareta, Disegni di Santi di Tito, Florence, 1985, no. 9, fig. 100
