Lot Essay

This is a study for the figure to the left of Clemency on the vault of the Sala Clementina in the Vatican, commissioned by Pope Clement VIII in 1596 and completed in 1604. Numerous studies for the ceiling and the walls by Giovanni and Cherubino are in the Gabinetto Nazionale delle Stampe, Rome, K. Hermann-Fiore, Disegni degli Alberti, Rome, 1983, nos. 20-33. According to the 17th Century annotator of Baglione the ceiling was painted by Giovanni and everything below the cornice by Cherubino, assisted by Baldassare Croce
