Lot Essay

The Italianizination of the signature suggests that the present picture was painted for an Italian patron. De Moor executed a self-portrait for the gallery of self-portraits in the Uffizi in 1691, for which, Houbraken relates, he was rewarded with a gold medal and chain by Grand Duke Cosimo III de Medici
