Lot Essay

Having studied under E.D. Polenova and V.M. Vasnetsov, Zvorykin became an illustrator and book designer for some of the most famous publishers in Russia. In 1910 he painted the cathedral of Simferopol and was involved in the decoration of Fedorovskii Cathedral at Tsarskoe selo. In the early post-revolutionary years he continued to design books, before leaving for Paris in 1921, where he continued this vocation, publishing illustrations to Pushkin's Boris Godunov and The Golden Cockerel, as well as volumes of folk-tales, which were strongly influenced by Ivan Bilibin, yet keeping his distinct style. His place and date of death remain unknown.
