Lot Essay

The field design of this rug is very rare to find in a pile rug from Bergama. It is a repeated version of the well-known ebelinde design frequently found in kilims (Balpinar and Hirsch, pp.182-187, pls.64-66 amongst many). Its origins are extremely ancient; it can be linked to prehistoric motifs found in Turkey. Much has been written on the symbolism of this motif, suggesting that it represents the Goddess flanked by vultures.
