Manuscript title within pencil, pen-and-ink and wash oval and garland of various flowers with a fly and butterfly in watercolour [by Franz Bauer], 136 letterpress pages of dedication, preface and text, with 4 pages of index (some leaves slightly spotted or browned). 264 ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR DRAWINGS OF FLOWERS AND PLANTS, 2 folding, after Jacquin (some slight spotting and off-setting, new tissue guards). Contemporary calf, covers with blindstamped key-pattern border within gilt foliate scrolls and floral cornerpieces, Imperial Arms of Austria, gilt spine similarly tooled, (skilfully rebacked preserving original spine), g.e. Provenance: Austrian National Library (booklabel with shelf mark 177687-E, with duplicate release stamp); sold Sotheby's 24 January 1949, lot 247.

BETWEEN 12 AND 18 COPIES ONLY OF THIS DE-LUXE EDITION ILLUSTRATED WITH WATERCOLOURS WERE ISSUED. The first edition with engraved plates was published in 1763. These drawings were copied from the author's originals made during his tour of the West Indies and Carribean in 1755 and 1759, and represent actual size. Each copy has a different title-page, some with the signature of the artist Franz Bauer; the text was expanded from that of the earlier edition. Nissen 980; Fine Flower Books p.61; Dunthorne 152.
