TREW, Christoph Jacob & Georg Dionysius EHRET. Plantae Selectae. [Nuremberg]: 1750-1773

10 parts in one volume, 2° (515 x 350mm.). 3 uncoloured mezzotint portraits of Trew, Ehret and Haid, 10 engraved titles of the decuriae hand-coloured in gold, red and black with the decuria number and final digits of the date supplied in manuscript, and 100 fine hand-coloured engraved plates after Ehret by J.J. and J.E. Haid, the captions partly gilded. (Without general title and dedication, 3 plates with small surface stains not affecting image, 2 plates slightly spotted, plate 38 with paper flaw outside plate mark.) Contemporary half calf and marbled boards, gilt roll-tool borders on sides, spine gilt (slightly rubbed and scuffed)

A CLEAN COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, in a contemporary binding. Like the Hunt copy, it lacks the general title but has the ten separate engraved titles and, as usual, does not contain the fourth portrait (of B. C. Vogel, who continued the work after Trew's death) or the very rare supplement with 20 extra plates. Ehret's plates are outstanding and the colouring is superb including, Pineapples, Papaya, Magnolias, Tiger Lily, Cereus, Arum, Arctolis, Iris, etc. Nissen 1997; Hunt 539; Dunthorne 309; Great Flower Books p.78.
