Lot Essay

The Antique marble original of the 'Crouching Venus' is now in the Uffizi Galleries in Florence. Considered either to represent Venus after her birth about to be drawn to land on a shell or Venus emerging from her bath, the 'Crouching Venus' was highly admired from the 16th century. The most famous copy was executed by Coysevox in 1686 for Versailles. Other versions in all materials and sizes were produced particularly from the second half of the 18th century for the Grand Tour market.
