AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURE 'ZONE CUP', attributed to the Nikosthenic Workshop, circa 520 B.C.

The interior depicting athletes and musicians, the figures being arranged radially with their feet touching the circumference of a large, black central disc. Moving anti-clockwise, a nude athlete stands looking back, holding his javelin at shoulder length, passing it through a thong; patterned cross and dot cloak hanging up; a musician wearing a similarly patterned cloak plays the double pipes; similar cloak hanging up; red-haired athlete about to jump holding out his weights (halteres), while a bearded competition judge, wearing a red and black striped cloak, points to him with a wand; red-haired discus-thrower faces another standing athlete wearing a red wreath who has raised his arms; competition judge awards a wreath to a victorious athlete who carries a similar wreath in his outstretched hands and wears a laurel wreath in his hair, with added red
