A study for the figure symbolising 'Recreation' in The Hours (Sheffield Art Gallery). Burne-Jones conceived the composition in 1865, but it was not started until 1870 and only exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1883. Studies for the figures tend to fall into two groups, some having been made in red chalk in the mid-1860s, others in pencil, in a more Italianate style, in 1870, when the picture was taken up in earnest. The present drawing is unusual in being in watercolour, and probably dates from as late as 1872. The pose is altered in the painting but the figure still holds a psaltery, which is transferred to her lap
